Built by BR at Darlington Works, D4174 was new to Ebbw Junction in June 1962 then relocated to Landore in 1969, becoming 08944 under the TOPS scheme during 1974.

08944 became a Mainline Freight loco in 1994 and was eventually withdrawn in April 1998 at Old Oak Common. The loco arrived at the ELR in 2001 where it saw use in the shunting fleet, being particularly useful having Air brake capability.

Sadly 08944 has been stored unserviceable for several years now and following component recovery will likely be for disposal in due course.
